How does the CO₂ savings meter work?
All the charging stations connected to the system report the total amount of energy fed into the fleets of buses. The CO₂ savings are calculated based on this information, as follows: A charge of one kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy produces 500 g of CO₂ using the electricity mix in Germany (as of 2017). At a power consumption of 150 kWh/100 km (the average figure for an electric bus), this results in 75 kg of CO2 per 100 km. A diesel bus consumes an average of 50 litres of diesel per 100 km and in doing so, produces 130 kg of CO₂. The resulting savings are 550 g per km or 366 g/kWh. Over the course of a week, the amount of energy that our charging stations deliver to the buses is aggregated; at the end of the week, the amount of CO₂ saved is calculated and added to the previous figure.
The initial value was derived from the number of kilometres travelled by all electric buses that have been charged using Schaltbau charging stations since 01.04.2019.
